4 Steps For Writing A Great College Admission Essay

4 Steps For Writing A Great College Admission Essay To a casual onlooker, this question may appear inconsequential in its hypothetical nature, but as they say; you are what you eat. My inclination towards the varied is not contained to my food habitsâ€"it is a recurring theme throughout my life. I regularly switch from my mom’s house to my dad’s. Yet, the rigors of the class compelled me to expand my thinking and learn to overcome any insecurities and deficits in my education. The effort paid off as I earned not only an ‘A’ in the course, but also won the T.O.P.S. award in statistics. My passion for climbing is fueled by the adrenaline that pumps through my veins. I love to play viola; I get a rush communicating without-words to my quartet members in order to convey a musical message. I am at my happiest reading a good book; their complex stories captivate me and I aspire to write a novel of my own. I want to make laws that improve my country; all people should have a shot at the American dream. I am passionate about protecting the environment; reducing our effect on global-warming is of the utmost importance to me. The most important thing to remember is to be original as you share your own story, thoughts, and ideas with us. It’s a chance to add depth to something that is important to you and tell the admissions committee more about your background or goals. Test scores only tell part of your story, and we want to know more than just how well you work. I have a fifteen-year-old sister and a two-year-old brother. We hope these essays inspire you as you prepare to compose your own personal statements. I grew up scaling the tallest trees I could find, desiring the highest vantage point. Growing up in the uniformly flat state of Florida, I was limited in my upward journey. Luckily, I rekindled my love for climbing in high school, and now cannot imagine life without it. Universities are looking for authenticity and quality of thinking, so don’t try to shape your essay around phrases or ideas that people have used many times before, but base it on your genuine beliefs. Great writing is hard to achieve, but it’s possible if you’re smart about it. Anyone who works in journalism will tell you that you can catch any reader’s attention as long as you deliver a great introduction. Through the combination of a genuine appreciation and knack for statistics and with his encouragement, I proceeded to take his advanced statistics class as well as the first graduate level statistics course at OU. I continued my statistical training by completing the second graduate statistics course on model comparisons with Dr. Roger Johnson, a Professor in the Psychology Department. The model comparison course was not only the most challenging course I have taken as an undergraduate, but the most important. As the sole undergraduate in the course and only college algebra under my belt, I felt quite intimidated. The duality of the periodic tableâ€"the cold, hard numbers mixed with the reassuring, steadfast patternsâ€"has manifested itself in every aspect of my life. The world of coding presented itself to me as a way to bring the patterns I loved into the world in a way I could see them. Take a look at our college essay samplesto get an idea of what colleges are looking for in your essay. Our vision is to be the company that best recognizes and serves the needs of international students around the world. Additionally, my attendance would allow the Political Science department to make a more accurate determination on how well I would fit in to the program than from solely my graduate school application. My interest in attending the University of Rochester in particular, relates to my first semester at OU and the opportunity to take an introductory course in statistics with the now retired Dr. Larry Miller. I want to help those in need; people still don’t have access to clean water and I want to use my privilege to help change that. I strive to become fluent in Spanish; traveling the world is a dream of mine. Recently, I have discovered that I really like to code; I’m sure in the coming years I will explore things I didn’t know I was interested in.

How To Write A Private High School Application Essay Worth Reading

How To Write A Private High School Application Essay Worth Reading While this wonderful kaleidoscope of cultures has caused me to be the ‘peacekeeper’ during meal arbitrations, it has fundamentally impacted my life. However, thinking on my own wasn’t enough; I needed more perspectives. Prior to attending Mountain School, my paradigm was substantially limited; opinions, prejudices, and ideas shaped by the testosterone-rich environment of Landon School. In one form or another, I've always been and will be a translator. A “14” etched on November 15, 2018, marked the first Lakeside Cooking on the Stove Club meeting. It would be fair to say that this was all due to Shellie’s upbringing. My room was on the first floor, right in front of Shellie’s hair salon, a small business that she ran out of her home. In the living room were six or seven huge amplifiers and a gigantic chandelier hung from the high ceiling. At first, the non-stop visits from strangers made me nervous, but soon I got used to them. I remember one night, a couple barged into my room while I was sleeping. Dawn, the host mom didn’t like winter, and Mark, the host dad, didn’t like summer. After dinner, we would all play Wii Sports together. I was the king of bowling, and Dawn was the queen of tennis. I don’t remember a single time that they argued about the games.Afterward, we would gather in the living room and Danielle would play the piano while the rest of us sang hymns. Eager to figure out the whole “vegan” thing, the two of us started binge-watching health documentaries such as “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives”. We read all the books by the featured doctors like “The China Study” and “How Not To Die”. I became entranced by the world of nutritional science and how certain foods could help prevent cancer or boost metabolism. I’ve spent most of my life as an anti-vegetable carboholic. What had started as a farcical proposition of mine transformed into a playground where high school classmates and I convene every two weeks to prepare a savory afternoon snack for ourselves. A few months later, a “16” scribbled on February 27, 2019, marked the completion of a fence my Spanish class and I constructed for the dusty soccer field at a small Colombian village. Hard-fought days of mixing cement and transporting supplies had paid off for the affectionate community we had immediately come to love. The Happiness Spreadsheet doesn’t only reflect my own thoughts and emotions; it is an illustration of the fulfillment I get from gifting happiness to others. Finally, I am a strong proponent of hands-on experience for learning what good food looks and tastes like, so cooking is one of my favorite ways to teach the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. Our society has taught us that delicious food has to make us feel guilty, when that is simply not the case. The best feeling in the world is falling in love with a dish and then learning all the health benefits that it provides the body. My transformation began with my mom’s cancer diagnosis. I fully embraced this new eating philosophy to show my support. My second family was the Martinez family, who were friends of the Watkins’s. The host dad Michael was a high school English teacher and the host mom Jennifer (who had me call her “Jen”) taught elementary school. She had recently delivered a baby, so she was still in the hospital when I moved into their house. When he reveals each lesson at the end, one after the other, we sense how all these seemingly random events are connected. We realize this writer has been carefully constructing this piece all along; we see the underlying structure. For years, processed snack foods ruled the kitchen kingdom of my household and animal products outnumbered plant-based offerings. The Dirksen family had three kids. They were all different. Danielle liked bitter black coffee, Christian liked energy drinks, and Becca liked sweet lemon tea. I was herded by result-oriented, fast-paced, technologically-reliant parameters towards psychology and neuroscience (the NIH, a mere 2.11 mile run from my school, is like a beacon on a hill). I was taught that one’s paramount accomplishment should be specialization. I sit, cradled by the two largest branches of the Newton Pippin Tree, watching the ether. The Green Mountains of Vermont stretch out indefinitely, and from my elevated vantage point, I feel as though we are peers, motionless in solidarity. But a few months ago, I would have considered this an utter waste of time. While translating has been a huge part of my life, a professional translator is not my dream job. I want to be an ambulatory care clinical pharmacist who manages the medication of patients with chronic diseases. In fact, translating is a huge part of the job of a clinical pharmacist. As my qualities as a “therapist” and a “tutor” shaped me into a great translator, I will continue to develop my future as a clinical pharmacist by enhancing and discovering my qualities.

Colleges can tell when you weren’t thinking about them specifically as you wrote your essay and were just casting a really wide net. Especially if you put the wrong colleges name on the essay! DON’T use too many exclamation points- you want to seem passionate about something, but exclamation points are informal, and too many can seem overly frivolous. The more you enjoy your subject matter the easier it will be to write the essay. Come back the next day with a fresh eye and go over it. You will be able to streamline your line of thought that way so you can fit into word counts. I think that the biggest trap that students fall into is to write about someone or something that influenced them , and then spend the entire essay telling the admissions office about their Great-Aunt Fanny. I am sure that Fanny was a lovely women, but the point of the essay is to tell us about you. Most applicants don’t need to submit a coursework exemption form. Get it right and you will be rolling in offers from top colleges and universities. Get it wrong and you might find yourself being wait listed or turned down altogether. A great admissions essay is one that follows the guidelines set out by the admissions board and tells them why they want you. DO make sure that your own personality shines through. Colleges look at the personality of each student as well as their qualifications. For example, write your admissions essay on a Saturday morning and then don't look at it again until Sunday or Monday night. After writing it, you'll have a better idea of what you actually wanted to say. It will be obvious after some time away where you're saying what you mean and what areas need work. This is your chance to show them who you are, not just what you’ve done! Don’t be afraid to ask for help on wording and style either, just make sure that your voice is always the one being heard, not your proofreader’s. Whatever you write, make sure that the message that is clearly conveyed is about who you are. One of the biggest don’ts from an admission counselor perspective is to use the wrong college name in the essay. Lots of students write one essay and send it to several colleges. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are following the guidelines that particular college has set for you.

Supplemental Essay

Supplemental Essay Why do writers seem to obsess over word count and page count? There are instances when you’re given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. For example, “Write a paper four pages long.” If you get an assignment to write four pages, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is, “How many words are in four pages? ” If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. When I was in school when I was younger, all assignments were page count. Many authors use word count as a motivational tool. To help them from getting stuck and editing each sentence over and over again as they write, they choose a minimum number of words they want to write each day. These words may not be perfect and will likely need to be heavily edited, but it gets the ideas down and keeps them from getting stuck on one area of their book. It works well for me, but I know others who don’t do well with it. If you find it hard to stop yourself from constantly rereading, try to scroll down the page until most of your essay is covered. Then don’t let yourself scroll up until you’ve surpassed 500 words (but make sure you’ve read step number two first). My interests range from sports to fashion but most of all literature. I have occasionally bright hair and an obnoxiously cheery personality. You’re not J.K Rowling, so stop beating yourself up for it. Like chocolate chips with ranch dressing terrible. But that’s okay -- the sooner you get over your terrible writing, the easier the rest of the essay will flow. It depends on how large or small your letters are. I average 240 handwritten words per college ruled sheet. This would depend heavily on how big/small you write. it’s like different fonts take up different amount of space on a page, so does your specific handwriting. The best way to know your per page word count would be to look at past pages and count the number of words you write for each page. it’s time consuming, but any other estimate is bound not to be accurate since it’s so dependent on your handwriting. I have a writing assignment in school, and it is always helpful to know how many pages I will need. I think that since teachers don’t give page assignments but only word count assignments, it’s difficult to imagine how many pages that will be. Why is everything word count these days instead of page count? In a few cases, these topics have been addressed effectively. But for the most part, it’s better to avoid subjects that could reflect poorly on your judgment and morals. After all, you don’t want colleges to think you’re someone they’d rather not have on campus. Ask them whether or not they learned those things from your essay. These elements include the average length of your words and whether your page is single- or double-spaced. But there are other aspects of your writing that you should consider when writing 1,000 words, such as font style, font size, and margins. I'm an 18-year-old aspiring writer/poet in Upper Sixth in England. I think it depends a lot on your personality, but forcing myself to be consistent day in and day out helps me get my books done. Without a daily word count, I would never complete them. Can someone explain to me why so many people are obsessed with word count and page count? If you’re a writer, shouldn’t writing well be the most important thing? The essay is supposed to reveal information that you haven’t had a chance to discuss elsewhere in the application. It’s meant to be a deeper dive into who you are beyond the numbers and accolades. As we mentioned earlier, you don’t know who is reading your essay or how they feel about these subjects. It’s best not to offend them or make them feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, applicants write about obstacles they’ve overcome or illicit/illegal topics including arrest, sexual experiences, drugs, and alcohol.

Anyone can write about how they won the big game or the summer they spent in Rome. When recalling these events, you need to give more than the play-by-play or itinerary. Describe what you learned from the experience and how it changed you. It could be an experience, a person, a bookâ€"anything that has had an impact on your life. Make sure that when you set out to write that you write the entire thing from the beginning. Avoid the temptation to cut and past but instead, open up a new file and start all over from the beginning. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. After you complete each list, start elaborating by adding in details. Anything you can think of should be added to the list as long as it meets the three criteria we mentioned earlier. College Admission Essay Samples

College Admission Essay Samples Focus on one event, one activity, or one “most influential person.” Tackling too much tends to make your essay too watered down or disjointed. Especially if you’re recounting an event, take it beyond the chronological storytelling. I don’t think it’s a terrible thing to help your teen to edit their essay if they’ll allow it. But, I do think you need to stick to giving feedback related to spelling, punctuation and other grammatical errors. Don’t try to edit out their own style or content. Your teen’s “voice” is the one that needs to come through. I am able even to buy and download anything I desire from the Amazon website whenever I want. However, as convenient as technology can be, I still prefer holding a book in my hands. I have always treasured the sensation of paper on my fingers as I flip through the pages of an engrossing story. Now, I keep my library card thin and toned, exercising it regularly. Essays should have a thesis that is clear to you and to the reader. Your thesis should indicate where you’re going and what you’re trying to communicate from the outset. One that has worked for many teens is to have them brainstorm 21 fun facts about themselves that most people won’t know about them. Again, I think that this is a place where parents can provide a little support. Sometimes, teens don’t recognize their own unique traits â€" but we do. So, it can help your student if you can throw out some ideas too. The workers at our local bookstores know me by name, and I keep business booming all the time. VoIP takes analogue audio signals and turns them into digital signals (packets) that are transmitted using Internet Protocol (IP) networks. VoIPs advantages include low cost, flexibility, and mobility. Conversely, VoIPs disadvantages inc lude sound quality such as latency (delay), jitter, and packet loss. VoIP has a number of cultural, social, and regulatory impacts that solution providers must consider when marketing their services. The major players in the VoIP market in Canada are Skype, Vonage Canada, Rogers, and Yak. Each player has its own separate marketing mix; however the majority are mainly targeting the technically savvy and small business niche segments. Even though the mass market is the ultimate goal for these players, much of their current business is found within these segments. Therefore, in order for the technology to cross the chasm from the niche to the mass market, the industry would do well to learn from other technologies that were in a similar position. For example, RIMs Blackberry gives suggestions on how to properly market to your target segment. At the basic level, it is to fulfill user needs and wants. However, it also includes fulfilling needs and wants that are sustainable for the solution provider (i.e. not just a low cost solution). In addition, the Blackberry also teaches VoIP providers the importance of using the purchaser vs. influencer model and the development of key partnerships to increase adoption. Fuel Cell (FC) technology has important lessons for VoIP providers in terms of the marketing message. FC technology shows that in order to reduce the appearance of risk in adopting a new technology, communication, education, and customer involvement are critical. Ericsson and 3G highlight the need for a complementary set of goods for the core technology. Overall, the implementation of these factors is vital for VoIP to cross the chasm.Introduction VoIP is a revolutionary new technology that could bring dramatic changes to the telecommunication landscape. However in terms of consumer adoption, the technology is at a crossroads and it is unknown whether it will be able to cross it. Author Geoffrey A. Moore has defined this crossroad as a chasm which has been successfully adopted by early adopters, but the late adopters are still left to be converted. The chasm can be described as follows:Figure 1 The chasm SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT The set of individuals involved in each stage have their own set of requirements and mentality towards the technology. To get a greater understanding of these customers mentality and requirements please refer to Appendix 1. The purpose of this paper is to give insights and recommendations into how VoIP providers can go about successfully crossing the chasm. The paper starts with a technical overview of VoIP which includes the advantages and disadvantages of the technology. The second part highlights the cultural and social impacts and the regulatory issues that VoIP providers have to consider when marketing the solution. The third section gives a brief introduction into the major players in the Canadian marketplace and their individual marketing mix. The next part discusses other chasm techno logies and the lessons VoIP can learn. Finally, the conclusion gives final recommendations for VoIP providers to take in order to cross the chasm. Technology Overview VoIP is a new form of communication that takes analogue audio signals and turns them into digital signals, or packets. This is an innovative alternate to the traditional circuit-switched method of telecommunication, where a dedicated circuit between two parties is maintained. In order to set up a traditional phone call between two telephones, the switched and the intervening network establish a dedicated route from one end of the call to the other. Conversely, VoIP uses a packet-switched method where audio signals are converted into digital data at the originating end, which is then transmitted over the Internet and converted back to analog signal at the receiving end. In other words, VoIP digitizes voice, inserts the digitized data into discrete packets, and sends them over the IP network. The packets have a de stination address, but no fixed path through the network. The packets arrive at the address, where they are put back together and converted back to analog audio signals. VoIP integrates voice and data communications and turns any Internet connection into a phone call. VoIP is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to drastically change the way people communicate and talk on the phone around the world.Advantages VoIP has a number of advantages. First, the major advantage is related to cost. VoIP has tremendous savings potential for anyone who communicates over long distance. For instance in a corporate environment, the cost for leased lines no longer exist if phone calls are transmitted over the Internet. In addition, if an employee moved to a different location within the same office using a regular phone system like the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), fees would be incurred in that move. To make such a move with a VoIP system, however, employees would o nly need to plug their IP phones into their offices Ethernet jack, with no extra cost. A digital private branch exchange (PBX) system already provides for the integration of traditional telephone services and thereby eliminates the aforementioned costs of moving. Secondly, flexibility and mobility are also utilized with the adoption of VoIP. Individuals can simply plug in their laptops, access the Internet, and talk on the phone, potentially improving organizational communication and customer service. In terms of customer service, VoIP has some advantages. Using VoIPs capabilities with different enterprise software, when a customer calls they can be routed easily to whom they want to talk, and the service representative will have easy access to pertinent information that will improve customer service. DisadvantagesVoIP also has its share of disadvantages when compared to the functionality of PSTN. A major disadvantage of VoIP is that it is a new technology. As a result, the long-term benefits and risks are not yet known. These risks include unknown service life of hardware and infrastructure, and details surrounding reliability and quality. The factors that affect the sound quality during transmission include latency (or delay), jitter, and packet loss. In terms of latency, human ears can withstand a delay of 150-250 ms and not be able to notice the delay. The PSTN meets this standard with a nominal delay of 150; however, VoIP cannot meet this standard of delay for a consistent period of time. Jitter is defined as the variability in packet arrival at the destination. Voice packets are transmitted over the same IP network as normal data packets a...

Sexuality Is A Social Identity That Goes Beyond The...

Sexuality is a social identity that goes beyond the objectivity of the title and into the subjective scope of the personal lives of individuals, which in turn fabricate the social constructivism of a nation. Classism, heterosexism, and cisgenderism are further reinforced within the institutionalization of heteronormativity, being the promotion of the gender binary and heterosexuality as the only valid form of gender expression and sexual orientation. The normalization of this system is not enforced as inconspicuously as one would believe, with both Western and Eastern countries visibly dictating social norms in regards to sexuality, by deeming certain sexual practices as socially acceptable through the sanction of microaggressions and†¦show more content†¦These American words which are typically used to further define and label individuals who do and do not fall within the classifications of heteronormativity are used as the result of there being no cultural explanation and validation for lesbian Thai women. The omittance of a translation for the term â€Å"lesbian† in the Thai language further perpetuates the validation of heteronormativity as the only acceptable form of relationships. The term â€Å"men† being used interchangeably with lesbian demonstrates how in the Thai culture it is assumed and widely agreed that only men would be sexually attracted to women (Sinnott, 2). For Asian women, their sexuality has not only impacted their identity, that identity in itself has created a power structure within each of these countries that has grown to include, but not outwardly accept the sexual practices of marginalized groups of women. In Thailand specifically, it is made known that homosexual behavior does not necessarily lead to an identity, nor does it â€Å"necessarily constitute a distinct transgression of sexual or gender norms†, yet the secularization of queer women leads to class divides, and sociocultural boundaries with the intention of exclusion (Sinnott, 3). Virtualism in architecture Essay Example For Students

Virtualism in architecture Essay VIRTUALISM IN ARCHITECTUREThis subject was suggested as a possible topic from the course outline. As it is an area of much interest and controversy was chosen as the direction of study for the paper. Previous research into Virtual Reality (VR), coupled with a particular interest in its architectural application also proved motivating. However, although the direction of the initial research appeared straightforward, after further investigation it became obvious that there were in fact two distinctly different interpretations that could be drawn from the area of Virtualism in Architecture. This division was between whether VR was used FOR architecture (VR used as a tool to aid in architectural design). Or whether it was used AS architecture (architectural design within the world of VR). Therefore this paper will be divided into two sections, each discussing the two different ideas with the aim of applying a necessary critical perspective. Firstly, what is virtual architecture and how does it fit into the definition of architecture? Dace Campbell, Graduate student of the Human Interface Technology Lab at Washington University Seattle, offers his explanation. It is the ordering and definition of meaningful space as developed in response to a need or program. An expression of society in spatial experiential form. Thus virtual architecture, Campbell adds, is that which embodies and expresses values of society or culture in electronic form, with polygons vectors and texture maps as opposed to bricks and mortar (www Reforms in the Late 1800s and the Early 1900s, EssayLarijani, L.
